Does The Book of Hebrews Teach We Can Lose Salvation?

Hebrews does not teach that a born again Christian in the church age can lose salvation.

Author and Audience

The Book of Hebrews is written to Hebrews and the King James translators saw fit to make that fact clear in their addendum to the very last verse of the book, saying, “Written to the Hebrews from Italy, by Timothy.” And, of course, Timothy and others wrote the inspired (God-breathed) words dictated to them by Paul as he was directed by the Holy Spirit. Paul suffered from an eye-ailment (see Galatians 4:15) and usually only wrote a short closing remark at the end to authenticate his letters (see Galatians 6:11).

The fact is, the Book of Hebrews is written to Jews who were professing to believe in Jesus as Messiah, but were trusting in the temple sacrifice for salvation–an obvious contradiction and comparable to the false cults (Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, etc.). These temple-bound Hebrews were operating under a faith plus works system and Paul wrote to thoroughly and lovingly refute this false gospel. He did the same regarding the Judaizers in the church of Galatia and that is clear when we read the Epistle to the Galatians.

Who Are These “Brethren”?

Some might object that Paul refers to the Hebrews as “brethren”. But in context, he is using that term in the sense of his being a JEW and these Jews are his brethren after the flesh. He does the same in Romans 9:3 where he says, “For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.”

By reading from start to finish, it is clear that the theme throughout this letter to the Hebrews is that any belief system that relies on anything other than, or in addition to, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross is a false gospel that does not save. Therefore, only by taking verses out of context and ignoring the whole context of Hebrews, could anyone even think that this has anything to do with losing salvation.

Paul spends the first 16 verses establishing the deity and authority of Jesus Christ and then asks:

“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him” (Hebrews 2:3)

The answer is simple: you will NOT escape if you neglect the pure, simple Gospel (see 1 Corinthians 15:1-4) and trust in any other works-based false gospel. And that is the whole point that Paul is making from start to finish in the Book of Hebrews.

“If They Shall Fall Away?”

By the end of Hebrews chapter 5, Paul has clearly established that the blood of animals cannot save and only the blood of the divine Son of God can and does save, apart from any other blood sacrifice or other “sacrifice” (ie., works) on our part.

That is where the Holy Ghost puts the message down loud and clear in chapter 6, but is also one of those places where many choose to wrest the text out of it’s context and end up believing and teaching dangerous, false doctrines. We should heed Peter’s warning in 2 Peter 3:15-16 where he says that many have read Paul’s letters and wrested the Scriptures (taking them out of their proper context) to their own destruction! Here is what Peter says:

“…even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.”

So, let us keep these things in context. When we read Hebrews 6:4-6, we must remember the previous 5 chapters which have clarified that a sinner cannot be saved by trusting in animal sacrifice. Then we read:

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

This explains why 99 out of 100 people who make a PROFESSION of faith in Jesus Christ but later profess to REJECT the Gospel never return.

This explains why 99 out of 100 college professors (like Bart Ehrman, for example) who testify of having “been an evangelical” but now attack, or at least repudiate, the historic Christian faith will die in unbelief.

Did they “lose salvation”? No. They are simply revealing outwardly that they were never true believers inwardly. And they fulfill this warning with their lives.

You may ask, “But preacher, you said 99 out of 100 and the text says it is “impossible… to renew them again unto repentance.”

Yes, because only God knows the heart. And once in awhile someone will appear to be an exception. But the exception proves the rule!

And the bottom line is, there are people in this world who will be enlightened (like Judas Iscariot) and will taste of the heavenly gift (see Matthew 12:1-4) and will be made partakers of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 10:5-8) and taste of the good word of God (Matthew 11:1) and the powers of the world to come (Matthew 19:28), yet they (like Judas Iscariot) will fall away.

And when such people fall away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance:

“Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
“Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
“And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.”

(Matthew 27:3-5)

Why is this? Why is it impossible to renew a Judas to repentance?

The answer is in Luke 22:3 where we are told, “Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.”

The fact is, there is an entire generation of Judas Christians carrying Vatican versions and following the Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, Robert Schuler, ecumenical, new age, Emergent Church apostasy. They are denying the Rapture. They are watering down the doctrines of grace. They are embracing Sodom. And they, like the Hebrews, are denying the full and exclusive salvation provided in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ alone as they embrace “all paths lead to God” and “there can’t only be one way” spirit of the age.

And when the Rapture happens, these will be left behind and it will be impossible to renew them again to repentance (though these all PROFESS to have “believed” or “been save”). Paul describes this in 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12, “And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

Again, in Romans chapter one, Paul explains this process where men reject the Creator and it becomes impossible to renew them again unto repentance, even connecting the dots from rejection of God to the embrace of Sodom in verses 26 and 27 saying, “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.”

So, why is it impossible to renew them again? Well, just as it was with Judas, God hands these Christ-rejectors over to Satan. Paul puts it like this in Romans 1:28:

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.”

And for those who “hob nob” with such reprobates, Paul warns us in Romans 1:32, “Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

What About Hebrews Chapter 10?

With the previous 1,000 words (plus), we have laid down with clarity that only by keeping things in context, reading the whole Book and not just select portions or verses, and by taking “all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) into consideration, we know that the warnings in Hebrew are toward those who are trusting in some other sacrifice, in addition to that of Jesus Christ on the Cross, for eternal salvation.

We will close by seeing this play out, again, in Hebrews 10. And this is how simple a matter it is. Let’s survey this one chapter and see that it follows the same pattern that we have spelled out above:

Verse 4 “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”

Verse 10 “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Verse 12 “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”

Verse 14 “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”

Verse 23 “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)”

With this survey, we see the groundwork laid, again. No other sacrifice can add to what Christ has done. We must trust in Christ alone,…

”For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
“But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”

(Hebrews 10:26-27)

What is the “sin”? Unbelief. Hebrews 10:29 spells this out:

“Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?”

When these Hebrews replace the blood of Christ with the blood of bulls, they are committing blasphemy and revealing a heart of unbelief. When anyone, including these Hebrews, add works or some other sacrifice, laws or works, they have “done despite unto the Spirit of grace.”

And such a person cannot be saved in their unbelief.

The Sin of Unbelief

Four times in the Book of Hebrews, the “sin” that Paul is dealing with is stated in no uncertain terms to be UNBELIEF.

Hebrews 3:12 says, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”

Hebrews 3:19 says, “So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”

Hebrews 4:6 says, “Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:”

Hebrews 4:11 says, “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”

Question To The Hebrews: Do You Believe or Not?

The purpose behind the Book of Hebrews and the theme of the Book of Hebrews is the same as the closing thought of Hebrews chapter ten. Paul is presenting a choice to the Hebrews. They must be saved by faith or be LOST. Hebrews 10:38-39 makes this clear:

“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”

Closing Thought

I have been in the ministry for 20 years as of the time of this writing. I can tell you that I have seen some believe to the salvation of their souls and I have seen others draw back. Of those who draw back, there are some who do so immediately upon hearing the Gospel. There are others who play along, even learning the terminology and “Christianese” that would make them sound Christian, but they later draw back.

Upon the authority of the word of God, none of these were ever saved. This is illustrated for us by Jesus in the parable of the sower. Those pictured as having received the seed by the way side, in stony place or among thorns were LOST.

Those who received the seed by the way side were exposed immediately in their unbelief. Those who received the seed in stony places “dureth for a while” but later were exposed in their unbelief. And those who received the seed among thorns seem to last a good while but are also, eventually, exposed in their unbelief.

There is a difference among believers. Some bear more fruit than others. Some are “saved so as by fire” (1 Corinthians 3:15). But ALL are saved by FAITH (Ephesians 2:8-10, Titus 3:5, John 3:16-18, etc.).

The warning of Hebrews is not that truly born again Christians (a term you don’t find in Hebrews, at all) can “lose salvation” (also terminology not found in Hebrews). The warning of Hebrews is for those who are playing Christian while not truly trusting in the Gospel of Jesus Christ alone for eternal salvation. You either get to Heaven through the blood of Jesus Christ alone, or you don’t get to Heaven at all.

Religion Kills: Jesus SAVES!

The liberal who wants to attack Bible believing Christians will use many different ploys. One is to make the statement, “Every major war was caused by Religion.” Or “Religious wars have killed more people than anything else.”

Another ploy is to say, “Once a religion claims to be the only true way, then people get killed.”

These are all very FALSE accusations. For one thing, Atheists in Russia and China have killed 50 million plus in wars against their own people. You couldn’t find more ANTI-RELIGIOUS nations in human history. So, if religion were to problem then what explains all of these murderous atheist nations?

Another FACT that the accusations above miss is that Bible Believing fundamentalists believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven and we haven’t started a SINGLE war and haven’t killed anyone in the name of “religion”.

Contrary to the lies, the Bible teaches that Jesus is the only Way to salvation but then says to LOVE your enemies.

The Founders of Christianity and The Bible
Read John 14:6. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Did Jesus ever kill anyone? He believed He was right and everyone else was WRONG. Why didn’t He kill anyone? Why didn’t He ever teach anyone to kill those who reject His teaching?

Do you see that? The liberal claims that if a person believes they have “a corner on the truth”, then that person is dangerous. But it is illogical to hold such a claim and historically proven to be FALSE.

Consider the Apostle Peter. In Acts 4:12, Peter was speaking about Jesus and said, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Peter says all other religions are false and only Jesus can save. Did Peter ever kill anyone? The obvious answer is, “NO!” He cut a man’s ear off and Jesus picked it up, put it back on his head and HEALED the WOUND.

BOTH Jesus and Peter thought they were “right and everyone else is wrong.”

The accusations made by liberals that we quoted in the first few lines of this article should be recognized for what they are: Unabashed Bigotry.

Liberals lie. They lie about the first amendment and the so-called “separation between church and state”. They lie about gun control and the second amendment. Liberals lie and they lie and they lie…

What About The CRUSADES???
Because of an inherent ignorance, liberals do not seem to realize just how MUSLIM they sound. Both liberals and Muslims try to use the Crusades as an excuse to attack Bible Believing Christians.

But there is a plain and simple fact that they each ignore. This fact is that the Crusades involved UNSAVED ROMAN CATHOLICS. The Popes who ordered the Crusades (Alexander II, Gregory VII, Urban II, etc.) were not Bible believing Christians. The people who went out to kill and pillage in the name of the Holy Roman Catholic Church were NOT born again Christians. They were a bunch of unsaved Roman Catholics who believed they would go to Heaven by KILLING Jews and Muslims. (Sound familiar? Jihad?)

Official Roman Catholic doctrine as found in the Council of Trent and left unchanged by Vatican II is clear in it’s claim to be the ONLY true church and that salvation is ONLY through their church. Rome also makes clear that born again Christians are “anathema”, which means “CURSED” and lost without hope of being saved.

Jesus said, “Ye must be born again.” (John 3:3-7) The Apostle Paul taught that you were saved by believing the Gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 & Romans 10:9-13). NOT A SINGLE POPE OR CRUSADING CATHOLIC BELIEVED THAT.

Roman Catholics who believe in the magic arts of Catholicism and it’s baptismal regeneration, cannibalistic “eucharist” and idolatrous prayers to Mary and the saints (among other things) are no more saved than the members of Heaven’s Gate or followers of David Koresh, Joseph Smith or Jim Jones. And the Crusaders were good CATHOLICS who raped women and little girls, who split the heads of Jews wide open, who sodomized Muslim women and decapitated their men. And they didn’t do it in the name of Jesus Christ (as is falsely claimed by antichrist educators). They did all this in the name of Mother Church and her so-called Vicar of Christ in Rome. And they have NEVER been excommunicated. (Neither has Hitler or his henchmen for that matter.)

Biblical Christians had nothing to do with the Crusades. Yet, they believe that Jesus is the only Savior of the world an that all other religions are FALSE.

Why Does Religion KILL?
Every major religion makes one deadly mistake and this deadly mistake is NOT thinking they are right and everyone else is wrong. That claim is utterly absurd. The deadly mistake made by all religions is the establishment of the Church State model with the inevitable laws forbidding religious dissent under threat of imprisonment and/or death.

Read that again and let it sink in.

Claiming to be “the only true faith” has NEVER caused any religious person to kill anyone. This is the same asinine logic that leads to gun control when a gun has NEVER killed anyone. Just as “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” so it is with the doctrine of exclusivity (that ONLY Jesus saves).

Rome adopted the Church State model under the first REAL pope, Constantine, in the fourth century. The Edict of Milan did NOT grant full religious freedom (as falsely claimed by your college professor), but provided for some relief from certain select persecuted groups. And it was the empetus behind the establishment of Nicolaitanism as the State Church of the Roman Empire, which came to be known as the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

But it didn’t take long for the Church State to use it’s absolute power to enact laws forbidding religious dissent under threat of imprisonment and/or death. By 385 AD, the Roman “church” killed Priscillian and six of his followers by beheading them, simply because Priscillian believed and taught what Rome called heresy. Since then, untold millions have died at the hands of Roman Catholic killers.

Other examples of the murder of Bible Believing Christians and other non-conformists by the Church State include:

The Orthodox Church– Examples are replete, but Russia is the best documented. There, any non-Orthodox Russian has been subject to persecution, arrest, imprisonment, torture and execution. While executions are not taking place at the moment, Bible Believing congregations are referred to as “sects” and “cults”. Extreme restrictions exist and are becoming more extreme as the Russian Orthodox Church continues to seek to restore it’s stranglehold on Russian religion, as it once did before the Bolshevik Revolution. This same thing goes on in Greece, Armenia and anywhere else the Orthodox gain political control.

The Protestants– Calvin established a Church State model in Geneva, Switzerland and passed laws against any form of religious non-conformity. He burned Servetus at the stake. He drove Castellio out of town and into poverty for daring to speak out against the murder of Servetus and for calling on Calvin and the Geneva leadership to put an end to the Church State model. Many others died, were imprisoned and tortured under Calvin’s Church State rule.

The dictatorial actions of Calvin are detailed by Dave Hunt in, “What Love Is This?” And these same sorts of crimes against humanity are well-documented everywhere that a Protestant Church State has existed. The Puritan witch trials in Salem, Mass., and the persecution of Baptists for hundreds of years are well-documented by others ans demonstrate the point.

Lutheran Germany– Every Church State sprinkles babies and calls it “baptism”. You won’t find this in the Bible, just like you won’t find the Church State in the Bible. But this practice is done in order to build citizenship into the Church State. It’s the Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Lutheran “church growth plan”. The Church controls the state, “baptizes” all newborns into the Church State and then takes total dominion. This explains why Luther espoused the baptismal regeneration heresy (a soul-damning false doctrine) in his Catechism.

When Luther couldn’t persuade Jews to join his Church State, Luther began calling on his fellow Germans to drive Jews out of Deutschland, burn their synagogues, destroy their belongings and send them into foreign lands, completely destitute of their belongings. And they did. And when a duck-walking little punk named Hitler rose to power five centuries later, he found Luther’s writings to be of the utmost usefulness in dredging up nationalistic support of his “final solution” for the “Jewish problem”. Hitler also cited the Pope’s and great demoniacs like Chrysostom and Augustine.

What is seldom mentioned is Luther’s venom toward Baptists. He called for them to be sent into exile and denied basic religious freedoms. God only knows what Luther might have done to Jews and Baptists if he had been given control of the civil powers of Germany.

Back To Our Original Questions
The fact remains that neither the Roman, Orthodox, Protestant or Lutheran churches had a Biblical ecclesiology (doctrine of the Church) and all of them enacted laws and/or binding resolutions calling for the imprisonment, torture and/or execution and/or banishment of those who refuse to conform to their particular religious traditions.

The fact remains that the Bible CONDEMS all four branches of mainline denominationalism. Rome and her offspring will be destroyed for their anti-Biblical persecution of Bible believing Christians and non-conformist Jews. Read Revelation 17-18 for details.

The additional fact remains that the Bible CONDEMNS the Church State model (Revelation 2:12-15 & 1 Peter 5:1-3, etc.) and CONDEMS violence against so-called “non-conformists” (Matthew 5:43-45, Luke 6:27-29, etc.).

The fact IS that a Baptist named Roger Williams wrote the first Constitution that had a TRUE “separation clause” banning a Church State in Rhode Island.

The fact IS that Thomas Jefferson was writing the Danbury Baptists when he used the phrase, “wall of separation between church and state” in order to assure the Baptists that the Episcopalians would not be establishing a Church State in Virginia.

Jesus is the only REAL emancipator. He preached freedom of conscience and He will only send people to Hell if they so CHOOSE and DESIRE to go there. And no born again follower of Jesus Christ would work to establish a Church State or persecute anyone for not repenting and believing the Gospel. We simply pray for you to see the light and go on with our lives.

The ONLY true religion just happens to be the ONLY religion that actually PROTECTS the rights of atheists, occultists, cultists, etc., to believe as they wish. Judgment, condemnation and execution of the death sentence against those who reject Jesus Christ comes AFTER this world is ended and the Great White Throne takes place. Until then, we will simply preach to them all and let God sort them out.

“I’ve Been A Christian All Of My Life”

Anyone who says that they do not need to be saved while claiming, “I have been a Christian all of my life,” is making two very criticial errors:

1. They are contradicting God’s word.

2. They are decieving themselves.

Contradicting God’s Word: Were You Born SAVED?

It is impossible that anyone has actually been a Christian all of their lives. While we know that a child is born INNOCENT, the fact remains that every child is concieved in sin and born with a sin nature.

King David makes it clear that we are conceived in sin and that sin is in our very nature, saying, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” (Psalm 51:5)

As children, we have a sin nature. But we are in a state of innocence by virtue of the fact that we have no understanding of God’s Law. As Paul wrote, “Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.” (Romans 4:15)

This state of innocence remains until we reach what some call the age of accountability. What this means is that we are born in sin but innocent of breaking God’s law until we reach the level of mental and spiritual maturity that we understand God’s Law.

Once a child is conscious of God’s Law and of their own sin nature, then that child has become responsible for their lost condition. The fact of man’s sin nature is revealed to each person as he or she becomes aware of their own acts of sin and an inherehnt tendency toward those acts of sin. EVERY child who reaches such an “age” or mature level of understanding MUST be born again.

Self-Deception: Believing Lies

Sadly, many people are taught lies by their very own preacher (priest), teachers and favorite Bible commentators. These lies would seem to negate the necessity of the new birth.

For example, the idea that sprinkling water on a baby who is completely unconcious of God’s law, sin or the Gospel somehow places that child into a covenant with God is a Satanic lie, sending millions to Hell without a genuine faith in Jesus Christ. Such a soul-damning false teaching is the result of reading things OTHER THAN the Bible and making the word of God of no effect by superceding it with the philosophies of men.

Others say, “Well, I’ve just always believed.” Believed what?

You couldn’t have believed anything as an infant or toddler. You are lying to yourself, if you think you have just “always believed”. There had to come a point when God dealt with you about your sin nature and your need of following Jesus Christ by being born again, as He taught in John 3:3-7.

When did you begin to believe what God’s word says about you? When did you become conscious of your sin nature and that you had been violating God’s laws (like lying, disobeying your parents, covetousness, etc.) even as an infant and toddler? When did you repent and turn to God in faith, trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross as full payment for your sin and in the resurrection of Jesus Christ as God’s guarantee of His victory over sin and death?

The Apostle Paul agrees that we must be born again, saying that we, “were by nature the children of wrath.” (Ephesians 2:3) This is why Jesus said, “Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7) In our natural state, we are born in sin. We need a supernatural birth so that we can be born again, born of God’s Spirit.

When did you ever face these facts and deal with God, one on one?

If your priest, pastor, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, best friend, etc., are telling you not to worry about all of this because you were born into a good Christian home, were sprinkled as an infant, have always been in church, etc., IGNORE THEM.

God’s word is your authority. And on that authority, you can see that you have NOT always “just believed”. And if you go on in such vague and superficial terms with God, you are risking eternal damnation. We urge you to throw off tradition and trust in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone for your eternal salvation.
